VSPLC Start Up Device (REQUIRED by NFPA with engine higher than 200kW)
Due to the pump drive engine always start engine with water pump connected, which have large torque on the engine, so NFPA20 have clearly requirement for VSPLC start up device of the engine higher than 200kW, which start the engine by 15 seconds soft start, to lower down the harms on the engine caused by the quick start up, so A8: VSPLC Start Up Device is required by NFPA20 standard.
As part of SinoMac, PumpMac provides abundant premium pump-driven power pack options, WPT PTO, Advance gearbox and pump head, as well as customized water pump set. We also have a set of NFPA20 standard engine power pack accessories including air intake shut-off valve, DC contactor, engine control panel, jacket water heater etc. We provide full life cycle services for all customers, from design to power system supply, from installation to commissioning, from after-sales service training to spare parts supply, from trouble shooting to overhaul technical support.
If you are in need of pump model that not available on our website for the moment, please contact SinoMac sales team for technical details and related documents, our well trained sales and engineering team will help you with all products and techical documents available here at UL-listed.com.
Why is 15 seconds a mandatory requirement in NFPA20?
1.Address the unique challenges of direct pump-engine connection
Fire pumps are directly connected to engines, generating significant torque (pump inertia + water system resistance) at the moment of startup.Traditional direct startup causes severe mechanical impact on the engine, shortening its service life.
2. Scientific basis for the 15-second requirement
Tests have shown that 15 seconds is the optimal time to balance "startup smoothness" and "response speed."It not only limits the starting current to a safe range (1.5-2.5 times the rated current) but also avoids delaying fire protection water supply. This duration completely eliminates water hammer effect, protecting the piping system and valves.
3.Explicit requirements in NFPA20
For fire pump engines with power greater than 200kW, NFPA20 mandatorily requires the use of VSPLC soft start with a startup time of not less than 15 seconds. The purpose is to protect the engine from startup impact caused by high torque loads of the fire pump, ensuring long-term reliability.
